  • The company has been criticized for slow response times.
  • Direct Auto is not included in many industry studies, making it difficult to assess its financial stability.
Direct Auto car insurance is a great option for people who need high-risk coverage. If you’re looking for non-standard car insurance and other companies will not offer you coverage, Direct Auto may be a great option for you. With Direct Auto, you’ll pay higher rates for car insurance. But you may qualify for discounts on coverage. Additionally, Direct Auto files SR-22 forms for its customers and has a mobile app that allows customers to make payments and file claims.

Finding the right auto insurance coverage can be difficult, especially when so many options exist. However, if you have a driving record that includes at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, or DUI charges, you may not have many viable options for car insurance coverage.

Most auto insurance companies do background checks that show a limited criminal history and your motor vehicle report (MVR). If your MVR shows reckless driving, hit-and-run charges, or any other blemishes on your driving record, your options for car insurance will be limited.

Direct Auto provides car insurance to people who are considered high-risk drivers. The company allows people with bad driving records to purchase policies when other car insurance companies refuse their business.

If you purchase a policy with Direct Auto, you will pay higher rates for coverage. Still, anyone who cannot buy car insurance with another company may see Direct Auto as an excellent option for coverage.

Before you purchase car insurance with Direct Auto, you should compare quotes from several insurance companies in your area. Finding and comparing quotes will help you determine which company offers the coverage you want at a price you can afford.

Remember that policies carrying more than your state’s minimum car insurance coverage will cost more than those offering liability insurance. If you want a full coverage auto insurance policy, you can expect to pay more in monthly or annual rates.

What You Should Know About direct auto insurance

Direct Auto is a good insurance option for high-risk drivers, but the company’s customer service does not rank highly. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), an insurance company’s average complaint index should be around 1.0.

Direct Auto’s complaint index is 2.49, which means the company receives more than twice as many complaints as an average company of its size. As a result, Direct Auto is ranked low on J.D. Power’s southeast car insurance companies. However, the company does have an A (Excellent) financial strength rating with A.M. Best.

If you’re a high-risk driver in need of car insurance, Direct Auto could be a good option. Still, you should find and compare rates from several companies before you decide on your car insurance provider. Comparing auto insurance rates can help you find a company that offers the coverage you want at a price that works for your budget.

What are the pros of a Direct Auto car insurance policy?

You’ll enjoy several benefits if you purchase car insurance with Direct Auto. Some of the most significant benefits of a Direct Auto insurance policy include:

  • SR-22 filings
  • Life insurance coverage for bundled policies
  • Flexible payment options
  • High-risk coverage options for certain drivers
  • Discount options
  • Options for coverage in several states
  • Simple and intuitive quote and claims processes

Each of the benefits listed above can be extremely helpful to high-risk drivers who need proper auto insurance coverage in their state.

SR-22 Filings

Depending on their driving infractions, high-risk drivers may need to file an SR-22. For example, if you have multiple speeding tickets, at-fault accidents, a hit-and-run, or a DUI or DWI on your driving record, you may need to file an SR-22.

Many insurance companies do not file SR-22s on behalf of their clients, but Direct Auto will. With Direct Auto, you’ll pay a $35 fee, and the company will file an SR-22 on your behalf with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

Filing an SR-22 may result in higher car insurance rates, but you may be able to lower your rates over time by improving your driving record.

Life Insurance Coverage and Bundled Policies

In addition to auto insurance for high-risk drivers, Direct Auto sells life insurance coverage to its policyholders. As a result, many Direct Auto customers purchase both insurance coverages and enjoy a discount for bundling multiple insurance products.

For a discount, many insurance companies offer options to bundle policies — like homeowners insurance and car insurance coverage. Still, high-risk drivers will not have as many options for bundled coverage.

Flexible Payment Options for Customers

Direct Auto offers flexible payment options to its customers. For example, if you need to make monthly or annual payments after a certain time, the company will work with you to ensure you maintain your car insurance coverage.

You can tell your agent if you need flexible payment plans with Direct Auto. Then, you and your agent can develop an option that will work for you. Of course, you can always request changes to your plan, but you need to do so before your payment is due.

Good Coverage for High-Risk Drivers

High-risk drivers often find it hard to get proper car insurance. Direct Auto may be a good option if you’re a high-risk driver. The company offers minimum coverage policies, collision, and comprehensive insurance, and you could qualify for discounts to help lower your monthly or annual rates.

Discount Options to Save Money

Direct Auto provides discounts to help lower customers’ coverage rates. If you’re in the military, have a high school or college student, or purchase a life insurance policy, you may be eligible for a discount on your auto insurance with Direct Auto.

Coverage in Several States in the U.S.

Some car insurance companies only provide car insurance in a handful of states. Still, Direct Auto offers coverage in several states in the U.S. If you’re a Direct Auto customer, you may be able to carry your policy wherever you move. Additionally, Direct Auto’s national presence makes it easier for high-risk drivers to purchase coverage regardless of where they live.

Simple Processes for Receiving Quotes and Filing Claims

You can get a quote with Direct Auto straight from the company’s website or call and speak with an agent or company representative. Additionally, Direct Auto allows customers to file claims online, with the mobile app, or by speaking with a representative.

What are the cons of a Direct Auto auto insurance policy?

While there are several benefits to purchasing coverage with Direct Auto, there are also some drawbacks to coverage with the company. Some of the most significant disadvantages to purchasing car insurance with Direct Auto include:

  • Higher-than-average rates for coverage
  • Several complaints concerning car and life insurance
  • No add-on options
  • A slow process for addressing customer needs and concerns
  • An absence from most industry studies

Direct Auto may not be for you for some of the reasons listed above. But, most significantly, Direct Auto’s prices for coverage may be too high if you have a clean driving record.

Pricey Coverage

If you’ve considered purchasing auto insurance with Direct Auto, you must first find and compare rates with other companies.

Direct Auto provides coverage to high-risk drivers, so the company’s rates are typically higher than many other insurance companies. If you have a clean driving record and can get coverage with another insurance company, you may want to do so to save money on coverage.

Customer Complaints

According to Direct Auto auto insurance review, customers regularly complain about the company’s coverage, customer service, and claims processes. Read customer reviews and complaints online to learn more about what customers think before you buy coverage with Direct Auto.

No Add-On Options

Direct Auto does not offer add-on coverage options like rideshare insurance, new car replacement, or gap coverage. If you’re looking for a customizable policy, you may need to choose a different car insurance company.

Slow Response Times

Direct Auto customers complain about the company’s lack of quick and reliable responses. Customers claim it takes too long to get answers to their questions, and they must continually check in on the status of their claims before they learn about any developments.

Not in Industry Studies

One of the best ways to learn about any company is to read about its ranking in different industry studies. Unfortunately, Direct Auto is not present in many different auto insurance industry studies, which makes it difficult to know how financially stable the company is and whether it’s a good investment.

direct auto insurance Insurance Coverage Options

Direct Auto offers the standard types of car insurance you would expect with any auto insurance provider. These coverages include:

  • Liability. Liability auto insurance protects you if you are in an accident and cause damage to someone’s vehicle or cause any injuries. Liability insurance is mandatory in most states in the U.S.
  • Collision. Collision auto insurance coverage helps pay for damage to your car if you’re at fault in an accident and your vehicle is damaged.
  • Comprehensive. Comprehensive auto insurance coverage would pay for damage to your vehicle if it occurred outside of an accident. Common reasons for comprehensive car insurance claims include inclement weather, wild animals, theft, and vandalism.
  • Medical Payments (MedPay). MedPay helps cover medical bills associated with a car accident.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP). Personal injury protection coverage is similar to MedPay coverage and may also cover lost wages.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage pays for damage someone causes to your vehicle if they do not carry proper coverage in your state.

Does Direct Auto offer additional auto coverage?

Direct Auto offers four options for additional vehicle coverage:

  • Rental car reimbursement. If you have to rent a car after a covered event, Direct Auto will reimburse you for your costs up to a certain dollar amount.
  • Towing and labor. If you have to tow your car to a garage, Direct Auto will pay for the towing. Direct Auto also pays for certain labor and repairs.
  • Accidental death. If you die in a covered loss, this coverage will pay your beneficiary $5,000.
  • Customizable payments. Direct Auto offers customizable payment options so customers can decide when they pay their installments. You can set up monthly, quarterly, twice-annual, and annual payments with the company.

Direct Auto does not offer other typical add-on car insurance options, like rideshare coverage or new car replacement. Because the company caters to high-risk drivers, its coverage options are significantly limited.

If you’re looking for a company offering more customized coverage options, you should search for car insurance elsewhere. Find and compare quotes from several car insurance companies before deciding on the best company.

Direct Auto Insurance: The Bottom Line

Direct Auto car insurance is a great option for people who need high-risk coverage. If you’re looking for non-standard car insurance and other companies will not offer you coverage, Direct Auto may be a great option for you.

With Direct Auto, you’ll pay higher rates for car insurance. But you may qualify for discounts on coverage. Additionally, Direct Auto files SR-22 forms for its customers and has a mobile app that allows customers to make payments and file claims.

Before you choose Direct Auto, you should shop online for car insurance. You may find cheaper rates with another company, especially if you have a clean driving record. Still, Direct Auto could be a great option for anyone with speeding tickets, a car accident, or a DUI on their record.

Direct Auto car insurance rates are higher than rates with other companies. Still, if you’re a high-risk driver, Direct Auto may be a great company for you.

In addition to considering your driving history, Direct Auto considers additional factors when determining your car insurance rates, such as:

  • Age
  • Location
  • Gender
  • Marital status
  • Credit score
  • Coverage type
  • Car make and model

Your auto insurance rates with Direct Auto will change based on the abovementioned factors. For example, if you have a clean driving record and are older than 25, you will likely get lower car insurance rates with most auto insurance companies.

How do auto insurance rates change with age?

Car insurance companies generally charge the highest rates when people are teens or young adults. However, as you get older, your car insurance rates should decrease significantly.

One exception to this rule is if you have blemishes on your driving record, like an accident, multiple speeding tickets, or a DUI. A bad driving record will cause your rates to increase even if you’re over 25.

How much is Direct Auto insurance for teens?

Teen and young adult drivers pay more for auto insurance than any other demographic. Insurance companies see these drivers as more of a risk because they lack experience behind the wheel.

Is Direct Auto expensive for young adult drivers?

Young adult drivers between 20 and 25 pay less for car insurance than teen drivers. However, certain companies may still see this demographic as more of a risk to cover, especially if a young adult driver has an accident on their record.

Direct Insuance -Check for add ons

Went into the Direct Insurance office on Elvis Presley in Memphis TN. Was in need of insurance and just the basics due to the cost and funds. I explained that all I wanted was the required amount and nothing else. The woman gave me a price. I accepted. 2 weeks later I get a email policy and start reading it. I then find out I am paying $32 a month for road side assistance that I was clear about I did not want. I went to another company and bought a policy and cancelled the Direct policy. Now they bill me for $160! Not ever going to happen. Referred it to state commissioner office.

Get that auto insurance

It was a pretty unexpected experience if I had to give my honest opinion. They were very kind and understanding to my lack of understanding concerning automotive insurance. That being said I’d highly recommend them to anyone.

So easy to work with and give a lot of leeway

Well, this is my second time to have auto insurance with Direct, the first being several years ago, and I have to say they are so drastically improved from them to now, it's unreal. I personally went to their local branch to inquire about pricing for insurance. I liked what I heard and I signed the agreement that day. And they are so easy to work with, if you can't get to the office you can just go online and make your payment and have a receipt...

Bad Experience

Very bad experience. They are not responsible for anything nor are they cheap. I had an issue for roadside assistance which I paid for but not performed once I needed it.
