Pros

  • SAIP insurance provides coverage for injuries after an accident for eligible Medicaid members.
  • SAIP insurance offers affordable coverage for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.

Cons

  • SAIP insurance is only available for a limited number of drivers who meet specific eligibility criteria.
  • SAIP insurance doesn’t cover all the basic coverage needs, and additional insurance may be required.
While it offers valuable protection, car insurance in the U.S. can be expensive. When you’re struggling to be insured, one of the best ways to find affordable coverage is to check your eligibility for SAIP insurance. National Continental is a subsidiary of Progressive and sells Special Automobile Insurance Policies (SAIP) in New Jersey. SAIP insurance covers people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford coverage and is only available to Medicaid members. However, not all drivers with Medicaid are eligible for SAIP insurance. You can check your eligibility by looking at the number on your Medicaid card, and an insurance representative can help.  Read on to learn more about National Continental’s SAIP insurance. If you don’t qualify for SAIP or need more coverage, you can find cheap auto insurance in New Jersey by comparing as many companies as possible.

Figuring out if you’re eligible for SAIP insurance from National Continental might seem complicated, but contacting a representative makes it easy. All it takes to find out if you’re eligible is the number on your Medicaid card.

If you’re not eligible, you have other options. When you need affordable car insurance, the best way to find cheap quotes is to compare as many companies as possible.

When you have an idea of which company has the lowest rates for you, an insurance representative can help determine the best coverage option for your needs.

What You Should Know About National Continental Insurance Company (SAIP)

Because National Continental doesn’t have a dedicated website, you can’t enroll online. Instead, you can enroll in a SAIP in two ways.

The easiest way is to call the Personal Automobile Insurance Plan (PAIP) number for New Jersey. National Continental has provided SAIPs in the Garden State since 2011 and offers expert advice on enrolling in the program.

You can also contact Progressive directly and ask for help with your SAIP application. Because the National Continental Insurance Company writes SAIP insurance for New Jersey, a Progressive representative can connect you with the right person to apply.

How can you find affordable insurance if SAIP isn’t enough coverage?

Unfortunately, not everyone is eligible for SAIP insurance, even when they’re on Medicaid. Even if you qualify, you might need more coverage than National Continental can offer.

If National Continental can’t meet your needs, you can get a quote from parent company Progressive. However, Progressive doesn’t usually offer the lowest rates in New Jersey. Additionally, insurance companies look at a variety of factors to determine how much to charge for coverage, so you won’t know which company offers the lowest rates without getting a quote.

Regardless of what company you choose to shop from, you’ll find the closest coverage to an SAIP is either personal injury protection or medical payments. Whichever coverage is sold in your state, you’ll usually see an increase in your rates between $5 and $50.

National Continental Insurance Company (SAIP) Insurance Coverage Options

While National Continental has sold insurance for over a hundred years, it currently focuses on SAIPs. SAIP is an initiative to help eligible drivers get limited car insurance when they otherwise couldn’t afford it.

To be eligible for SAIP insurance, you must qualify for federal Medicaid with hospitalization. Not all Medicaid programs qualify you for SAIP — you can have an insurance representative determine your eligibility by the number on your Medicaid card.

Only a small number of drivers will qualify for SAIP insurance. Some drivers with Medicaid can apply for SAIP if they would otherwise have to go without coverage, but not all low-income Medicaid members will qualify.

What types of SAIP insurance plans can you buy?

SAIP insurance covers emergency medical treatments after an accident, including brain and spinal cord injuries. When you qualify, SAIP covers up to $250,000 for treating your injuries. It also provides $10,000 for a death benefit.

It doesn’t cover outpatient treatments that your Medicaid insurance should handle. Additionally, it does not cover damage that car insurance takes care of, like liability, collision, or comprehensive coverage.

SAIP insurance does not replace regular car insurance, which you must have to drive in New Jersey.

Garden State residents have to carry the following insurance:

  • Bodily injury liability — $15,000 per person
  • Bodily injury liability — $30,000 per accident
  • Property damage — $5,000 per accident
  • Personal injury protection — $15,000 per person

If you need help affording basic car insurance, New Jersey offers Standard Automobile Insurance Policies. Not to be confused with what National Continental sells, Standard plans cover your basics for much cheaper.

When you want to buy SAIP insurance, your only option for coverage is through National Continental. You can buy a Standard car insurance policy from a variety of companies, including GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, and State Farm.

Like Medicaid, the price of SAIP insurance varies by year. Currently, drivers eligible for SAIP insurance pay $365 a year, which you can split into two payments of $182.50.

You can save $5 by paying up front rather than in two increments.

National Continental’s SAIP insurance doesn’t cover your basic coverage needs, and you’ll still need to buy a policy. If you’re on a budget, you should compare how much minimum insurance costs before you add the price of SAIP. The map below shows the average monthly minimum coverage rates by state.

New Jersey minimum insurance rates are generally affordable. However, there is a significant variation in the average price between companies.

This is why it’s so important to compare rates with as many companies as possible — your first pick might have higher rates than others.

The customer service is completely non-existent. We had a situation regarding a lapse of insurance, unbeknown to us, and [REDACTED NAME] constantly shifted blame, talked over us, didn't allow us to speak and was dismissive. There was clearly a breakdown in communication and instead of understanding our frustration and providing ACTUAL customer service, she deflected the entire time. My sister is an out-of-state college student who would NOT request a half a year insurance since she is out of state for more than half the year on campus, but [REDACTED NAME] was accusatory and said that my sister must have requested it instead of exploring the possibility that she, [REDACTED NAME], might have made a mistake. She admitted that she did not provide a placard that is given when you open a new policy because "they must not have had anymore” yet insisted that my sister should have called her directly instead of customer service, despite the initial paper my sister received told her to call customer service for any and all requests/issues. My sister opened the policy during COVID. It was a difficult time for everyone. We would have been more understanding if [REDACTED NAME] had thought through that and actually tried to provide assistance. What is even more baffling is that [REDACTED NAME] stated that they never call their clients if no response is received to mail sent. How is this customer service? ESPECIALLY during and post-pandemic where ALL businesses have been affected by the mass daily changes, supply and staff shortages. [REDACTED NAME] admitted that "they allow their client's insurance to lapse without reaching out to them without any verbal notice, and if they do it for one then they'd have to do it for all, they are not going to make an exception for one person, because then they'd have to do it for all." I'm sorry what?? What company doesn't give a courtesy call to their client? Again, where is the customer service? To top it all off, she finished the call with me, after she finally let me get a word in, by saying "so what are you going to do because I have other clients to help". WOW! Icing on the cake. The lack of regard, understanding and assistance is beyond me. I would NOT recommend this establishment to anyone and [REDACTED NAME] [REDACTED NAME] is a terrible representation of this company.
