What You Should Know About travelers companies, inc.
Travelers is one of the top auto insurance companies in the United States. The company has been in the insurance business for over 165 years and has a reputation as a leader in the industry.
While Travelers auto insurance rates fall below the national average, it’s not the cheapest insurer out there. In addition, Travelers doesn’t provide insurance in every state, and some of its offerings, like rideshare insurance, have limited availability.
Travelers has strong ratings overall. While financial and claims satisfaction ratings are high, the company comes in below average for customer service.
Travelers is a strong option for drivers looking for multiple coverage options with reasonable rates. However, before choosing Travelers, shop around. Compare coverages, rates, and ratings to determine if Travelers is your best choice.
Which drivers should get Travelers auto insurance?
Drivers looking for below-average car insurance rates from a reputable company might consider Travelers. While Travelers car insurance rates fall in the middle of the top insurers, they are below the national average across the board.
However, auto insurance for high-risk drivers who need SR-22 won’t have the coverage they need with Travelers since the company doesn’t handle SR-22.
Drivers in states where Travelers provides coverage may find the insurer has all of the coverage options needed. Additionally, taking advantage of the various discounts offered by Travelers decreases rates and makes the company more competitive.

What are Travelers’ ratings?
Although low car insurance rates are critical, how a company rates in financial strength, customer satisfaction, claims, and complaints are also significant. You need to know that your insurer is there when you need help.
We’ll dive into Travelers ratings in various categories to help you make an informed decision about whether or not Travelers is right for you.
Travelers Financial Rating
A.M. Best rates companies on financial strength. Travelers received an A++, which shows a superior ability to meet financial obligations. So, if you file a claim, you can be confident that Travelers can afford to pay the claim.
Travelers Customer Satisfaction Rating
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and J.D. Powers rate companies on how satisfied their customers are with various customer service aspects.
The BBB gave Travelers an A rating, showing that the company responds to customer complaints. However, the customer rating is only 1.1/5, and many complaints seem to center around customer service.
J.D. Power ranks companies based on customer satisfaction. For example, Travelers scored below average in customer satisfaction but ranked average in claims satisfaction.
Travelers Complaint Rating
Unfortunately, all insurance companies receive complaints about customer service or claims. However, while Travelers does receive its share of complaints, it received fewer than the national average.
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the Travelers complaint index is 0.93, while the industry average is 1.00.
travelers companies, inc. Insurance Coverage Options
Most states require drivers to carry at least the legal minimum car insurance coverage. The exact coverages and limits vary by state. However, coverage is minimal, and limits are very low.
Travelers provides many types of coverage, including:
- Liability. Liability auto insurance coverage pays for property damage and bodily injuries to others in an accident.
- Collision. Collision auto insurance covers damages to your vehicle from hitting another car, an object like a tree, and a one-car accident.
- Comprehensive. Comprehensive auto insurance coverage pays for vehicle damage unrelated to a wreck, including theft, vandalism, and acts of nature like floods.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist. This coverage kicks in if a driver hits you with little to no liability coverage.
- Medical payments (MedPay). MedPay helps cover medical costs, such as doctor visits and prescriptions.
- Personal injury protection (PIP). Personal injury protection coverage is similar to MedPay and can be used to cover medical expenses. It can also be used for related costs, such as lost wages.
While most states require liability coverage, a few require uninsured/underinsured motorists, medical payments, and personal injury protection.
Minimum coverage or liability coverage is typically required, but it only pays for property damage and bodily injuries to others. Therefore, you and your vehicle aren’t protected.
Full coverage includes the coverage your state requires as well as collision and comprehensive. Collision coverage pays for damages to your vehicle from a wreck, and comprehensive coverage pays for damages unrelated to an accident, such as theft, vandalism, and acts of nature.
While minimum coverage is the cheapest option and allows you to drive legally, it doesn’t provide coverage for your car. So, if you have minimum coverage and hit a tree, you’ll have to pay for your vehicle repairs.
On the other hand, full coverage is more expensive but covers repairs to your vehicle. For example, if you have full coverage and hit a tree, your collision coverage pays for damages.
Travelers Minimum Coverage Rates
Minimum coverage meets state requirements for insurance, but limits are low.
This table shows average Travelers car insurance rates for minimum coverage compared to the national average.
Average Monthly Minimum Coverage Rates for the Top Auto Insurance Companies
Insurance Company | Average Minimum Coverage Rates |
---|---|
Allstate | $50 |
American Family | $48 |
Farmers | $56 |
Geico | $24 |
Liberty Mutual | $64 |
Nationwide | $49 |
Progressive | $40 |
State Farm | $34 |
Travelers | $39 |
Average | $45 |
Travelers car insurance rates for minimum coverage are below the national average and fall in the middle of the top insurers in the U.S.
Travelers Full Coverage Rates
Full coverage auto insurance offers the most protection but comes with the highest rates. Full coverage combines your state’s mandatory coverage with collision and comprehensive. This way, not only are other drivers protected but you and your vehicle are covered also.
Look below to see the average monthly full coverage car insurance rates for Travelers.
Average Monthly Full Coverage Rates for the Top 10 Auto Insurance Companies
Insurance Company | Average Full Coverage Rates |
---|---|
Allstate | $166 |
American Family | $116 |
Farmers | $140 |
Geico | $82 |
Liberty Mutual | $177 |
Nationwide | $120 |
Progressive | $109 |
State Farm | $91 |
Travelers | $107 |
USAA | $63 |
Average | $123 |
While full coverage is more expensive than minimum coverage, you’re better protected. Without full coverage, you may wind up with costly repairs you must pay for yourself.
For example, let’s say you lose control on a slippery road and hit a tree. Your repairs cost $10,000. If you have full coverage, you only pay your deductible. However, if you have minimum coverage, you’re responsible for the entire cost of repairs.
What additional auto insurance coverage does Travelers offer?
Travelers offers drivers many add-on coverage options and features to customize their car insurance policy. Every driver has different needs and can pick the types of coverage they need while skipping others.
Other car insurance coverage and features offered by Travelers include:
- Gap coverage. Gap insurance coverage pays the difference between what you owe on your vehicle and its worth if the car is totaled. Most lenders require gap coverage.
- Accident forgiveness. Drivers can add this coverage if they have a good driving record. The first minor accident on the policy doesn’t raise rates.
- New car replacement. Your car is replaced with the same make and model if yours is totaled within the first five years, minus the deductible.
- Rideshare coverage. Rideshare drivers in Colorado and Illinois can add this coverage since their personal policy doesn’t cover driving for a rideshare company.
- Non-owner insurance. Drivers who need car insurance but don’t own a vehicle may qualify for non-owner insurance.
Accident forgiveness is part of the Responsible Driver Plan. The plan allows your first at-fault accident to be forgiven and not increase your rates. In addition, minor violations may be forgiven.
Keep in mind that each additional coverage raises your rates. So, while most add-ons have minimal costs, they increase your overall rates.
What auto insurance services and features does Travelers offer?
Besides car insurance coverage, Travelers provides various services and benefits for drivers.
Travelers also offers:
- Roadside assistance. This coverage provides help if you have car trouble. Roadside assistance services include towing, jump starts, fuel delivery, tire changes, and locksmith service.
- Decreasing deductible. Earn a $50 deductible credit for every six months you’re accident and violation-free up to $500.
- Mobile app. Drivers may access their policies, download insurance cards, pay bills, and file and track a claim.
While the mobile app is free for Travelers customers, there is a charge for roadside assistance. In addition, Decreasing Deductible is part of the Premier Responsible Driver Plan, and there may be a cost to enroll.
What other insurance does Travelers offer?
While Travelers offers abundant car insurance options, the company provides other insurance products that drivers can bundle.
Other insurance products offered by Travelers include:
- Home
- Renters
- Condo
- Boat and yacht
- Motorcycle
- Flood
- Pet
- Travel
- Commercial
- Business property
Since Travelers provides various insurance products, drivers may find the insurer meets all their needs.

How does your driving record affect Travelers auto insurance rates?
One of the most significant factors impacting car insurance rates is your driving record. It indicates whether you will likely cost the insurer money by filing claims. Drivers with accidents, tickets, and DUIs are more likely to file a claim. As a result, they tend to receive higher rates.
High-risk drivers with multiple infractions on their driving records see the highest rates. Additionally, drivers that need to file an SR-22 won’t be able to keep Travelers car insurance since the company doesn’t offer SR-22.

Does your credit score affect Travelers auto insurance rates?
Many drivers don’t know that their credit score impacts car insurance rates. Insurers believe that drivers with a high credit score are less likely to file claims and are more willing to pay out of pocket for vehicle damages.
This table compares average monthly Travelers car insurance rates with bad credit to the national average.

Drivers typically qualify for more than one discount and may bundle them for the most significant savings. For example, a driver may be eligible for safe driver, multi-car, and safety feature discounts.
In addition, not all discounts apply to your entire policy. An anti-theft discount, for example, only applies to your comprehensive insurance.
Does Travelers offer usage-based insurance?
Travelers IntelliDrive uses telematics in the app to monitor driving habits for 90 days. Safe drivers can earn up to a 30% discount on their car insurance. However, risky driving may lead to higher car insurance rates.
IntelliDrive runs in the background on your phone and monitors braking, speed, time of day you drive, and phone usage. Drivers who don’t drive late at night, speed, or use their phones while behind the wheel save the most money.
The Travelers IntelliDrive received a 4.2/5 rating in the Google Play Store and a 4.6/5 rating in the Apple App Store. While most reviews were positive, others stated the app was too sensitive or didn’t record the drive accurately.
Since Travelers may raise your car insurance rates if you score poorly, only drivers confident in their safe driving skills should try it.

Travelers Auto Insurance: The Bottom Line
Travelers is the sixth largest insurer in the country with solid financial and claims satisfaction ratings. Although Travelers car insurance rates are below the national average, they fall in the middle of other top insurers.
Drivers will find multiple car insurance coverage options and features to customize their policies. Travelers provides typical car insurance coverage as well as add-ons, such as roadside assistance, rideshare coverage, new car replacement, and gap insurance.
Travelers also provides numerous discounts to lower car insurance rates. For example, drivers can take advantage of the IntelliDrive program, which offers a 30% discount for safe driving habits. But, unfortunately, Travelers may raise your car insurance rates for unsafe driving.
While Travelers is a good choice for many drivers, coverage isn’t available everywhere. Additionally, drivers may find lower rates and more coverage with other insurers.
