What is State Farm Drive Safe and Save?
State Farm Drive Safe & Save is a free program designed to reward drivers for their good driving habits. As a usage-based insurance program, it monitors driving trips to collect data using the mobile app or Bluetooth device and calculate a driving score.
Depending on the driving score and state insurance laws, drivers can earn a discount of up to 30%. State Farm will apply the discount to your policy upon renewal.
State Farm doesn’t offer Drive Safe and Save in California, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts, but there are other discounts available to drivers who wish to decrease their rates.
State Farm Drive Safe & Save OnStar
Drivers also have the option to enroll in Drive Safe and Save using OnStar, which will send their driving data directly to State Farm instead of using a mobile app or Bluetooth device. An active OnStar subscription is required, which ranges from $24.99 to $44.99.
Similar to other versions of the program, you enroll, drive, and use the mobile app or log into your State Farm account to review your driving performance. Drivers earn an automatic participating discount for signing up for State Farm Drive and Safe with OnStar.
If you don’t have an active OnStar subscription, you will need one within 30 days of enrolling in the program if you wish to use this version. Without an active subscription, the participation discount will be removed, and a balance may be due.

How does State Farm Drive Safe and Save work?
Here’s how State Farm Drive Safe & Save works:
- Download the Drive Safe and Save mobile app. You can visit the Google Play or App Store or text “SAVE” to 42407 and receive a link to download the mobile app.
- Use your State Farm insurance login. Using your State Farm user ID and password, you can log into the Drive Safe & Save mobile app.
- Practice safe driving. The app will track your driving behaviors. Once enough data is collected, your driving score is calculated, and State Farm will apply your discount at policy renewal.
Drivers with a 2020 or newer Ford or Lincoln have the option to enroll in the program using State Farm’s Drive Safe and Save Connected Car:
- Open the FordPass or Lincoln Way app. Navigate the app to add the insured vehicle to the garage.
- Complete the form and confirm your enrollment. Once you turn on your vehicle, an in-vehicle agreement will appear. You’ll have up to 35 days or 20 times you turn on your vehicle to accept the agreement.
Likewise, you can contact your State Farm agent and let them know you wish to enroll in Drive Safe and Save. The enrollment form will appear the next time you start your car.
Since a participation discount is earned upon enrollment, the discount will be removed if you fail to accept the agreement, and a balance may be due.
What does Drive Safe and Save track?
When you enroll in Drive Safe and Save, you will not earn a discount until the app collects enough data about your driving habits. Each driver is then assigned a grade that corresponds with a certain discount amount.
To determine your grade, Drive Safe and Save tracks the following driving behaviors:
- Acceleration. Quick increases in speed could result in you losing control of your vehicle and causing an accident.
- Braking. Braking too hard may indicate you aren’t attentive or keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- Cornering: Making sharp, quick turns could result in loss of control of the vehicle.
- Speed. Speeding increases your chances of being involved in an accident.
- Distracted driving. Using your phone while behind the wheel can result in an accident.
Not only do customers earn a discount when enrolled in the Drive Safe and Save program, but they can also review trip details and receive driving tips on how to improve their driving habits. Learn more about pay-per-mile auto insurance coverage.

Is State Farm Drive Safe and Save worth it?
Your rates won’t increase as a result of your poor driving habits, so there is little risk if you enroll in Drive Safe and Save. However, you may not be attracted to the idea of being continuously monitored by your auto insurance company.
Drivers can switch auto insurance companies and enroll in a different UBI program if they feel uncomfortable having their driving habits continuously monitored. For example, Progressive Snapshot and Liberty Mutual RightTrack are two auto insurance companies that only monitor driving behaviors for a limited period. (For more information, read our “Liberty Mutual RightTrack Review“).
There are a few more pros and cons to State Farm Drive and Save, and you should consider the following before enrolling in State Farm Drive Safe and Drive.
Who should use State Farm Drive Safe and Save?
Here’s who should consider signing up for State Farm Drive Safe and Drive:
- Drivers who want to lower their auto insurance rates. You want to earn another discount that can decrease your car insurance rates.
- Drivers with an OnStar subscription. Signing up for Drive Safe & Save with OnStar earns you an automatic participation discount.
- Drivers with good driving habits. You keep distracted driving to a minimum and avoid speeding, hard braking, cornering, and driving during certain hours.
- Drivers who wish to only enroll one car in the program. You don’t want to or don’t have a second or third vehicle to enroll, which certain auto insurance companies with usage-based insurance programs sometimes require.
UBI programs like Drive Safe & Save are ideal for drivers who work from home, have short commutes, and live in less populated areas. If you’re interested in signing up, consider where and how often you drive before comparing car insurance quotes.
Who shouldn’t enroll in State Farm Drive Safe and Save?
Here’s who shouldn’t enroll in State Farm Drive Safe & Save:
- Drivers who want a consistent discount. Drive Safe and Save continuously monitors your driving habits, so your discount will change based on the driving data collected during your policy term.
- Drivers with high mileage. The more you drive, the higher the likelihood of being involved in an accident.
- Drivers who are often on the road during rush hour or late at night. Driving during a certain time increases the likelihood of you being involved in an accident, which can lower your potential discount.
State Farm insurance rates typically won’t increase based on your performance, but rates can change depending on your annual mileage.
For example, drivers who originally earned a discount based on a low annual mileage of 7,500 might see a rate increase if their mileage while participating in the program is higher than 7,500.

State Farm Drive Safe and Save vs. Popular Competitors
State Farm isn’t the only auto insurance company that offers UBI. In fact, many of its popular competitors offer this type of program to drivers looking to earn a discount for safe driving.
Even though popular competitors offer discounts through similar programs, drivers have the potential to earn a higher discount through State Farm than anywhere else.
Final Word on State Farm Drive Safe and Save
All drivers earn a discount when participating in State Farm Drive Safe and Save. Your driving habits may not get you the max savings of 30%, but your rates won’t go up due to reckless driving habits.
Unless you are receiving a discount for low mileage, there is no risk that your rates will increase. Drivers who commonly see their rates increase with Drive Safe & Save often start driving more than they were previously.
However, keep in mind that State Farm continuously monitors your driving to calculate the annual discount. If you don’t like being monitored by your insurance company, shop for usage-based insurance quotes from other companies.
